Due to anti-British sentiment throughout Iraq, a coup led by four Iraqi nationalist army generals called the "Golden Square" overthrows pro-British leaders with help from Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy.

The coup is successful, and a new, pro-German leadership is put into power.
