The British begins withdrawal from India after 200 years and divides the empire amid tensions into two independent nations based on majority religion: Hindu-based India and Muslim-based Pakistan.

Pakistan quickly faces disputes with its border as Afghanistan refuses to accept its location, claiming land that falls within Pakistani territory. From this arises an ongoing conflict which includes frequent skirmishes along the border.
