The great oxygenation event marked the first significant rise in oxygen levels in the atmosphere, occurring around 2.4bya. This sudden rise in oxygen levels was due to the evolution of cyanobacteria (5). Over time, these microorganisms developed the ability to photosynthesise, using sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose, releasing oxygen into the atmosphere as a by-product. This helped turn the atmosphere from one that was dominated by methane, carbon dioxide and nitrogen, to one capable of supporting life dependent on air. However, this caused mass extinction to many anaerobic organisms, affecting the biosphere. This also effected the geosphere, as the reaction between this new found oxygen and iron created banded iron formations, leaving a recorded layer in the Earth's crust. These layers would span across around 2 billion years, being one of the oldest dated formations.
