Watching the bitter fallout from Heard’s marriage to Johnny Depp play out in the tabloids and the courtroom this year was a grim affair. The ugly story of his excessive drinking and abusive behaviour and the subsequent restraining orders, divorce and acrimony was a car-crash spectacle that shattered any illusions of the Hollywood fairytale. Heard, 34, endured further abuse and accusations of lying from die-hard Depp fans online and outside the courts, but defiantly stood her ground. She has become a vocal campaigner on the issue of domestic and sexual abuse as an ambassador for women’s rights for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), speaking up about her experiences despite the punishing media glare.
