There were two great powers at that time, the pope for the Eastern Orthodox Christianity, and the patriarch for the Eastern Orthodox, located in Byzantium. They created The Great Schism because it would divide the leadership of Christendom into the Eastern Orthodox Church and Roman Catholic Church, instead of all of it being unified.
