1 июл 1997 г. - Handover of Hong Kong
Описание:
On 1 July 1997, Hong Kong was handed over from the United Kingdom to the People's Republic of China, marking the end of 156 years of British rule in the former colony. Hong Kong was established as a special administrative region of China (SAR) for 27 years, maintaining its own economic and governing systems from mainland China. The handover marked the end of a 99-year lease for the New Territories, which was granted by Britain in 1898. The 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration set the conditions for the transfer, with China agreeing to maintain existing government and economy structures under a principle of "one country, two systems" for 50 years. Hong Kong became China's first special administrative region, followed by Macau in 1999. With a 1997 population of about 6.5 million, Hong Kong constituted 97% of the total population of all British Dependent Territories and was one of the United Kingdom's last significant colonial territories. The transfer marked the end of British colonial prestige in the Asia-Pacific region, which had never recovered from the aftermath of the Second World War. The handover ceremony, attended by Charles III, is considered to mark the definitive end of the British Empire.
