On May 25th, 1925. John Scopes was charged for teaching Evolution to his high school class. A little under two months later, on July 21st, he was found guilty and fined $100, which is equal to $1,727 as of 2023. A few months prior, in March of 1925, the Tennessee governor signed the “Butler Act” into law. The Butler Act stated that teachers in state-funded or public schools were prohibited from teaching evolution. Teaching evolution was seen as blasphemy, and went against everything the bible says about the origins of humanity. However, the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) decided that they would finance a test case where they would challenge the constitutionality of the Butler Act. Their argument was that the state required that schools teach a certain textbook which included a chapter on evolution, which in turn required teachers to violate the Butler Act. All they needed was a teacher who was willing to act as their defendant… That was where a man named George Rappleyea came in. He was the manager of a coal and iron company in Dayton, Tennessee. He wanted to bring more publicity to the town, and sought out John Scopes. With the help of a few community leaders, they convinced him to act as their defendant. This case made it to the supreme court, and the Butler Act was deemed constitutional. It stayed in effect until May 18th, 1967
