The end of serfdom in Russia turned all of the serfs into peasants. They were now free legally, but because they had no education and no skills, they had no means of which to acquire a well-paying job that would raise their status. Because of this, they remained the lowest class, burdened with heavy taxes. The continuation of their bad situation led the peasants to want to rebel.
