1st tax passed by Parliament to bring revenue directly to the crown
- designed to create more revenue, not regulate trade
- high taxes placed on common goods

sugar act
- increased duties on imported goods, including sugar, molasses, wine, coffee, and textiles

cause: britain needed money to pay debts from the french & indian war

effects:
"no taxation without representation"
st. john incident
- americans fired at brits ship to try and stop them
polly incident
- British navy took goods and destroyed american ship

brits response to sugar act:
- sugar act was repealed
- quartering act -> intolerable acts
