Описание:

- A new magistrate responsible for the administration of justice through the issuing of edicts.
- The plebeians forced the patricians to allow them access to the consul.
- As a response, the patricians demanded the creation of the praetor. The praetor held imperium and was elected to serve for a period of one year, with the same rule applying to their edicts as before.
- This was a political position as it was usually a stepping stone to becoming consul.

Two types of edicts:
1. Traditional edicts - adopted from predecessors.
2. Perpetual edicts - in force for the entire term in office.
