Global colonialism, or imperialism, started in the 15th century during the Portuguese age of discovery, and then when the Spanish explored the Americas, Africa, the Middle East, India and East Asia. The first era of decolonization began in the end of the 18th and early 19th century, when most of the European colonies in the Americas gained their independence.
