A new era of history began in the 18th Century called "The Enlightenment".

Scientific discoveries, European political changes, and ideas of philosophers led to people placing emphasis on human reason.

Enlightenment thinkers argued that early traditions and authorities needed to be replaced by what human reason could discover for itself.

Led to a rejection of many religious beliefs. Ie: God's revelation was rejected as did not conform with what people thought.

Over time, people began to see the limits to human reason and personal opinions as it can't explain abstract things such as love and grief.

Changes brought about in the world of religion as well as the technology and science worlds.

Barriers caused by the Reformation broken down.

Ecumenical dialogue began.
