The uprising began on April 2 in aul No. 2 of the Balkash region: people arrested the ombudsman from the district executive committee. On April 4–5, residents of the 2nd aul of the Shokpar district rose. On April 6, the rebels of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 10th auls of the Balkash district occupied the district center Akkol .

The rebels attacked the shop "Society of Hunters" and seized the weapons there. Then they broke into the local “House of Soviets” and, interrupting the court session, burned all his papers about evicting bais. Employees of local authorities were arrested, and government agencies were destroyed. On April 7, at a meeting held under the chairmanship of Abdibek Nurabayev, the rebels decided to involve the inhabitants of neighboring regions in the uprising.

The arrival of the special group of the OGPU from Almaty prevented the expansion of the uprising. Poorly armed, the rebels did not dare to give battle and were forced to flee. Soon, the State Commission headed by the chairman of the CEC of the Kazakh Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, as well as the Commission on dekulakization, E. Yernazarov arrived in the rebellious area as a matter of urgency .

In Akkol, Ernazarov held a meeting attended by 200 people. What Yernazarov said to the assemblers is unknown — these could be both threats and promises. The participants decided to help capture the leaders of the uprising and return the seized property and weapons. After that, the punitive detachment proceeded to arrest the rebels. Many gave themselves fellow villagers. Until April 21, 25 people were arrested in the Balkash district, including one of the leaders K. Kuramysov. A group of rebels from the Shokpar district hid on the island of Zheltora at the confluence of the Ile and Balkash rivers. On April 27, they were discovered and arrested. Only 57 people.
