Several loosely related international military campaigns that started after the 11 September 2001 attacks carried out by al-Qaeda against the United States. The Bush administration and the Western media used the term "War on Terror" to describe a global military, political, legal, and conceptual struggle against both terrorist organizations and the regimes accused of supporting them. The military campaigns of the war took place mainly in countries located in the Middle East, some of which were associated with terrorist organizations or which, later in the period, were subject to unrest and terrorist uprisings of the Arab Winter. There is no widely agreed on figure for the number of people killed in the War on Terror, although estimates range from 1.3 million to 2 million casualties.
