On December 24th, 1979, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. The invasion occurred under the pretext of upholding the Soviet-Afghan Friendship Treaty, signed a year earlier. At night, on the 24th, there was a massive airlift into Kabul, with thousands of soviet soldiers landing, and taking control of the city. Soon after, Soviet soldiers would invade from the north. The Soviet soldiers would be faced with Mujahideen rebel forces, who would fight with guerilla warfare. They would be given support from the USA, with America sending supplies and weapons. Eventually, after nearly a decade of war, in February 1989, Soviet troops would withdraw from Afghanistan. It is marked blue because it forced a retreat of the Soviet Union.
