Romantic Art Movement (1 gen 1770 anni – 1 gen 1850 anni)
Descrizione:
Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog by Caspar David Friedrich best represents the romantic art movement as it expresses the nostalgic emotions and rejection of rationality as the only course of life. It shows that rationality has brought man to the top of the mountain and yet he can still see nothing. It is this idea of looking fondly back on the past. Romanticism is essentially a rejection of the idealization of rationality which prevailed in Neoclassical art and the ideas of the Enlightenment. It emphasized the importance of nature; the individual's emotional, irrational nature; the examination of the human condition and emotional potential, focusing on the passions and personal struggles of an individual. It embodied that the imagination was the key to unlocking the secrets of the world around us.
This art movement develops out of the failure of the French Revolution. Up until this moment individuals have worked towards the rational course of actions, following all the rational and good ideas of the Enlightenment (natural rights, the social contract and the rational nature of human that allows them to govern themselves), however, the French Revolution (that claims to embody these ideas) brings only suffering and death to society; in this all of mankind's scientific developments have done nothing to aid his understanding.
