The Great Depression (1 gen 1929 anni – 1 gen 1939 anni)

Descrizione:

Blacks were the last hired and the first fired at the start of the Great Depression. Whites called for blacks to be fired from any job as long as there were whites out of work. Roosevelts administration in 1932 paid little attention to the sufferings of blacks. By the end of his first term, the efforts of his wife, Elenore Roosevelt, became profoundly aware of the injustices suffered by African Americans. The Roosevelts began to speak publicly against race prejudice, lynching, and invited influential black leaders to the White house. Federal agencies soon began to open their doors to blacks by providing jobs, education, training and participation in federal programs. Black voters switched their political party from republican to democratic. Black Civil Rights organizations also increased their demands for their rights as citizens of the United States.
