n 1917, congress declared war on Germany entering the U.S into War World one. The war impacted both good and bad opportunities for all African Americans. Wartime opportunities included mostly domestic work for women, while black men made entryways into the manufacturing, packinghouse and automobile industries. African Americans viewed the war as an opportunity to bring about true democracy in the United States. Many saw the war as unjust because they were fighting for freedom abroad but still faced discrimination and no freedom at home. Blacks were expected to do their part in the war effort. They demonstrated their patriotism and their place as equal citizens in hopes that their patriotic sacrifice would have a positive impact on race relations and expand boundaries of civil rights.
