World War I, synonymously known as the Great War, was the first war that involved countries from all continents in the world. As stated, it was called the Great War and rightfully so; some 70 million military personnel were utilized. During the span of the war, 9 million soldiers and an estimated 5 million civilians were killed not including those made victim to regional genocides. The powers of Europe were then divided into 2 factions: The Triple Entente which included Great Britain, France, & Russia, and The Triple Alliance composed of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. Great Britain declared war with Germany on 4 August, 1914 upon receiving word that Germany had invaded Belgium. Britain, who originally wanted to maintain neutral and isolated from war, was concerned with German occupation of Belgium because of the relative closeness between the two nations, and because of their trading ports which Britain obtained a considerable amount of their goods across the English channel. The horrors seen at war are often the subjects in Modernist literature and is also romanticized in stories of men becoming soldiers, valiantly going to war.
