Irish Famine: “The Year of Slaughter” (1 gen 1740 anni – 1 gen 1741 anni)

Descrizione:

The Winter of 1739 had been a really cold one for Ireland and it was the beginning of the damage that was soon to come. The harsh weather destroyed the crops of potatoes before they were even able to grow. Potatoes had been a large part of the Irish diet because it was relatively cheap to produce. Due to the scarcity of the crops that year, the price of the potato had to rise significantly, which made it more difficult for the poor population of Ireland to attain. The original cold temperatures earlier in 1940 had caused a lot of the poor population to freeze to death, and the increase in the price of the potato caused even more of that population to die from starvation. The beginning of the year 1941 brought a lot of infectious diseases that brought even more death to the Irish population. The original factor of the people being weakened from starvation made the diseases even more deadly. An exact number of how many people died within that year is not exactly known, but it is estimated to be around 400,000.
