Individualism. The modernist period saw authors who favored the individual more than the society of the world at large. They focused on a single character trying their best to adapt to the changes in and around their society and world. These characters could turn out to best every problem in their way or just be holding on for dear life under the pressure of the changes around them. Modernist were mostly seen writing the later though whether making the character struggle greatly with a changing society or societal role was to make them more relatable or just easier for authors to grasp is unknown. An example of this individualism is the character of Orlando who has adapted a lot to fit in. Orlando’s strange aging means she often has to change to fit every time period she finds herself in and watches as the earth and the things on it change to grow. There is also the change in gender roles as well and how she handles them.
