In the early 1600s, exploration became a fast means of dominance and power by obtaining more land. In June of 1606, King James I granted a charter to the London Company to establish an English settlement in the Chesapeake region of North America. That same year 104 sailors from England sailed to The New World with instructions to build a settlement and explore the new world in hopes of finding gold, and to seek a water route to the Pacific. On May 14, 1607, settlers upon the Godspeed, Discovery, and Susan Constant landed in Jamestown and established an the first English colony. The Virginia Company found small success in finding gold, but the colonists neglected farming finding themselves perishing without food. Soon, disease, famine, and sporadic attacks from the Powhatan Indians took a tremendous toll on the population of the settlement of Jamestown as the colonists entered the “starving times” with warfare. This lead to the colonists abandoning Jamestown for a few years establishing Plymouth. King James I provided a second charter with an “able and absolute” governor with more laws and supplies for the suffering colony. Jamestown soon thrived with the success of tobacco becaming “the new gold.” Large sums of this marketable crop were exported to England. Due to Jamestown becoming a thriving port town, King James I declared the first colony a crown colony.
