The Church of England, or Anglican Church, is the primary state church in England, where the concepts of church and state are linked. In the past, church and state had been separate until the political movement of “The King’s Great Matter”. King Henry VIII of England had married his brother’s widow, Catherine of Aragon. The couple failed to produce a male heir to the throne causing great threat to England with yet another civil war. Henry VIII thought this was a sign of divine judgment against him for disobeying God’s biblical law found in Leviticus 18:16. In 1527, Henry appealed to the annul convincing that their marriage was not valid in the first place, and thus both spouses should be released from their matrimonial vows. The Pope declined, his predecessor having already granted Henry the special dispensation for his current marriage. However, Henry continued to press his case and after much convincing the Archbishop of Canterbury declared the marriage “invalid” in 1533. The king then removed England from the Pope’s jurisdiction in 1534 making Henry the head of church and state combined. With Henry VIII now in charge of the people of England’s law and religion the reign of the Tudors began.
