Wrote both comic and serious opera, although he is best remembered today for his comic operas.
An extremely prolific composer: wrote almost 40 operas within 20 years, then mysteriously stopped composing opera when he was only 40.
At the height of his opera career, he was one of the most famous and popular composers in Europe .
