Benito Mussolini was an Italian political leader who became the fascist dictator of Italy and joined forces with Hitler to try and get the land that Italy had thought that they would get after the first world war.

In March 1919, Mussolini formed the Fascist Party, stimulating the support of many unemployed war veterans. Mussolini gradually took apart the institutions of democratic government and in 1925 made himself dictator, taking the title 'Il Duce'. He set about attempting to re-establish Italy as a great European power.
