capital.​ ​ ​The​ ​U.S.​ ​paid​ ​Mexico​ ​15​ ​million​ ​dollars​ ​and forgave​ ​2​ ​million​ ​in​ ​debt​ ​in​ ​return​ ​for​ ​about​ ​55%​ ​of Mexican​ ​territory​ ​that​ ​now​ ​makes​ ​up​ ​Texas,​ ​New Mexico,​ ​Arizona,​ ​California,​ ​Nevada​ ​and​ ​parts​ ​of​ ​other states.
