Beginning in 1444, Prince Infante D. Henrique (“Henry the Navigator”) started selling African slaves in Portugal. Over time, the Portuguese formed a relationship with kingdoms on the west coast of Africa and began exporting Prisoners of War from countries like Ndongo. This is important in world history because it marks what can be considered as the start of the Atlantic Slave Trade. (4.1)
