Hailing from Portugal, Bartolomeu Dias and his voyage into the Indian Ocean proved that it was possible to sail around Africa into the Indian Ocean. Dias sailed back home not long after he arrived because he and his crew were worn out. His voyage, however, led to a powerful Portuguese presence in the Indian Ocean, as the Portuguese learned to use the monsoon winds and tried to control trade in the Indian Ocean. These efforts had mixed results, but they were just the first of many European missions in Asia. (4.1)(4.3)
