Victorian period and the 19th century (1 gen 1832 anni – 1 gen 1901 anni)

Descrizione:

Queen Victoria reigned from 1837 to 1901, and her reign corresponds roughly to what is called the Victorian Period and La Belle Epoche in central Europe. More precisely the start of the period is considered to be 1832 when the Reform Bill was passed. The Victorian Period was one of the enormous changes, for example, the nonconformist churches. Britain became the leading industrial nation and the banker of the world. The British middle class established itself as the ruling class, not only of Britain but of an empire in which one-quarter of the population of the world lived. The brittish global imperial expansion which made the British Empire the largest in history. Great unpredicted demographic changes, trading, naval and industrial supremacy.

The Victorian Period was an age of contradictions. It was an age of prosperity with an increase of wealth first of all for the middle classes, but also for the working classes. Industry expanded so that Britain became the workshop of the world. And yet, it also was an age of poverty. There were the slums of London and of the industrial Midlands. It was an age of religious faith, and yet it also was an age of doubt with the gradual dissemination of evolutionary thinking. Writing during the early period of Queen Victoria's reign also includes sentimental words. Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters belong to the late Romanticists and early Victorian writers. During this time there was social, economic, and political upheaval. Sentimental stories and stories on double standards, especially among higher classes.

The passing of the Reform Bill of 1832 was a large step for the middle classes on its way to power. All property-owning men now had the right to vote. The working classes and women were still without this right. In the early 1840s a severe economic depression set in, and the conditions of the working classes were so bad that riots broke out.

During the late Victorian Period, which followed after Charles Dickens’ death in 1870, brought an end to the progress and sense of stability of the previous 30 years. The middle classes met with crisis and problems on three fronts: military problems, economic problems, and political problems.

I Hear America Singing

1. The mood of the poem is a bit dark but at the same time it contains a lot of pride.

2. I think that Whitman wants to portray the different social classes and the real people of America.

3. According to me, he feels proud to be there and a part of the country. His pride permeates throughout the whole poem.

1. Quite young, wonderfully handsome and extremely agreeable.

2. He had entertained hopes of being admitted to a sight of the young ladies.

3. She came up with the idea of him being gone to London only to get a large party for the ball.

4. Because it increased the competition between them.
