Under Han rule, China entered a “Golden Age,” a long period of stability and wealth. Education, literature, and art flourished while new practices, inventions, and discoveries improved people’s lives.
IRON → learned how to pour this metal into molds which then improved strength and quality of armor and made plows out of this.
SILK → produced from the fibers of a silkworm cocoon, high demand outside of China due to it lightness and breathability while being worn.
SALT → valued in ancient times because people used it to help preserve meat and vegetables.
PAPER → used calligraphy to write on this and cheap to produce so more people could afford writing materials.
ACUPUNCTURE → process in which thin needles are inserted into specific parts of the body -thought to rebalance the forces of yin and yang, believed to be useful for curing illnesses that strike quickly, like headaches.
MAGNETIC COMPASS → instrument for determining direction, such as north or south.By the 200s C.E., Chinese scientists understood that a lodestone, a type of iron ore, tends to align itself in a north-south direction because of Earth’s magnetism.
