Charlemagne became King of the Franks in 768, king of the Lombards in 774, and the first emperor of the Romans in 800. He united most of Europe under his rule by his military strength, restored the Western Roman Empire, and facilitated under him a cultural and intellectual renaissance. This golden age was known as the Carolingian Renaissance in which an education infrastructure was created among many other things.
