January 20, 2009- January 20, 2017 Before becoming president of the United States, Barack Obama was the Senator of Illinois. He was the third African American elected since the Reconstruction after the civil war. Additionally in 2009 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He went on to become the first black president of the United States. This was very significant to the U.S. because there are not very many African Americans in politics and no black person has been successful in running to be president.
