The Vietnam War was a long war fought between North Vietnam and South Vietnam. At the time, there was a cold war going on between the United States and the Soviet Union, and this further intensified the fight in Vietnam. Both sides agreed that Vietnam should be unified but one side wanted a country built upon communism and the other wanted more economic and cultural ties to the West. During the cold war with the Soviet Union, the United States said that anyone who allied with the Soviets was an enemy and then proceeded to profess support for South Vietnam. U.S. forces got rid of northern communist sympathizers in the South. President Kennedy acted on the “domino theory” which was the idea that if one Asian country fell to communism, then other countries would be soon to follow so he helped the south in military and economic aid.
