World War II (1 sett 1939 anni – 2 sett 1945 anni)
Descrizione:
World War II was the largest and most deadly war in history, and it involved over 30 countries. The United States had been edging toward war with Japan for a long while, but the bombing of pearl harbor, in which many U.S. citizens and troops perished. On the other side of the war, it began after Adolf Hitler rose to power in 1933 and started persecuting Jews. About 6 million Jews were persecuted during his reign, and many were placed in concentration camps where they faced very poor treatment and oftentimes faced death in many sickening ways. Many say that the United States failed to get involved soon enough and once the government found out, they failed to help in an adequate way. This is true in some ways because the events happening in Germany were kept private by the government and there were strict immigration laws preventing Jews from seeking refuge as well as growing anti-Semitism in the United States. On January 22, 1944, the president of the U.S. gave an executive order that established the War Refugee Board which had many successful rescue missions and saved over 200,000 Jews. Many Americans were clueless about the Holocaust happening in Germany until the Allied Powers terminated the concentration camps.
