World War I begins in 1914 after the assassination of Franz Ferdinand. In the war, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire were known as the Central Powers and fought against Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Romania, Japan, and the United States who were known as the Allied Powers. From this war, over 16 million people were dead. Throughout the first two years of the war, the United States managed to stay neutral under the government of President Woodrow Wilson, but after Germany sunk several U.S. ships, the U.S. finally became involved. In 1917, Congress passed a $250 million bill for arms appropriation, and after four more ships were sunk by Germany, the United States declared war.
