The Civil War began after Lincoln became president because there was talk of his plans to outlaw slavery. As a northerner, it was clear to the southern states that Lincoln planned to do everything in order to benefit the North. Many of the southern states did not want this because it would greatly upset their economy since slavery was its main economic driver. So, seven southern states that did not agree with Lincoln branched of from the Union and created the Confederate States of America. The Civil War was kicked off by the the battle of Fort Sumter when Lincoln wanted to send resources to his troops in Fort Sumter, but the Confederacy would not allow it because they said that it was in their territory. This led to the start of the war when Confederate troops open-fired on Fort Sumter. In 1865, the Confederates were defeated and slavery was abolished under the 13th amendment. Soon after, Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth.
