Pope Sylvester II (6 gen 999 anni – 27 gen 1003 anni)

Descrizione:

was a prolific scholar of 10th century Europe who introduced Arab knowledge of math and astronomy/astrology as well as Arabic numerals to Europe after traveling to Spain and meeting with Arab and Jewish scholars.

Pope Sylvester II was also known as Gerbert of Aurillac. Muslims in Spain and Sicily had preserved many of the Greek classics in Arabic translations. Following the scholarly works of Sylvester II, twelfth century Christian scholars often traveled to Sicily and Spain to translate works of Aristotle from Arabic into Latin. These preserved, but imperfect translations led to increased interest in Aristotle and, in the thirteenth century, using texts from the Byzantines, efforts were made to translate Aristotle from Greek into Latin.
