Became a prominent, wealthy city-state in the 1100's, officially became a republic with and efficient government by 1297. Expanded the empire in the 1400's, Spent the rest of its meaningful years fighting the Ottoman Empire over Cyprus, Crete, and other islands in the Aegean Sea.
