Reagan knew that building up the United States defense system would make the Soviet Union do the same thing. There was just one thing, our economy could withstand the increase spending, Soviet Unions could not. But they used their money on defense anyway and basically pushed them bankrupt. Reagan's plan was successful. Also Reagan created SDI which was a satellite defense system that would help destroy missiles while they were in the air on their way to hit the target.
