-Grew out of the ideas of Dada (particularly similar in their views of the buorgeouise)
-Wanted to reassert the invicibility of artistic genius. (this notion of genius originating from originality)
-Pure psychic automatism intended to express the true function of thought.


+End of WWII produces the end of fighting, but doesn't completly lead to peace in Europe.
+Economic devestation in war-riddled countries. (such created the grounds for political polarization)
+1922- Mussolinni rose to power, at the head of the National Facist Party. (Italy)
+1924- Stalin gained control of the Soviet Union following Stalin's death. (USSR)
+1924-Hitler was building the Nationalist Socialist (Nazi) part into a mass political movement. (Germany)
+Surrealism was a revolutionary movement not only in the art scene but politically as well.
+Surope was in a deeping poltical crisis, finanical collapse, and the rise of facism all of which lead to moral axiety within the avant-garde.
+Many felt that the government system (which were believed to have been derivived from tradition and reason) had lead the world into the bloodiest of battles and therefore government was undesirable.
+The Russian Revolution and spreading of communism had provided a channel for the surrealist protests of the 1920s.
+Picasso who did some surrealist work in the 30s became a communist in protest of Francis Franco's facist rule.
+After WWI socialism had drawn many artists.
