The Meji period helped Japan come out of their lifetime of isolation. Matthew Perry a U.S Navy Commander forced the Japanese to open their trade ports to the U.S, the Japanese accepted. The Meji period modernized Japan because it adapted technologies and transportation to make everyday life better. The Japanese government also adopted a number of ideas from European countries and the U.S. They reconstructed their constitution because Japan's leaders sought to create a constitutions that would define Japan as a modern nation. The Japanese also created a army and new navy which was built by Japanese engineers and architects who were tranined by french naval experts.
