He was a leading industrial designer in the United States and a design theorist.
Van Doren studied languages and went to Paris where he worked at the Louvre. In the early 1920s he returned to the United States and worked there as assistant to the director of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. He finished his activities to start his own industrial design company. He received one of his first assignments from the Toledo Scale Company. At his request, he made designs for scales, in which he was one of the first to melt large pieces of plastic, making the product lighter. His company was based in Philadelphia and worked for, among others, Good Year and Philco Corporation.
