UTILITY FUNITURE PROGRAMME (1 gen 1942 anni – 2 gen 1952 anni)

Descrizione:

Utility furniture refers to furniture produced in the United Kingdom during and just after World War II, under a Government scheme which was designed to cope with shortages of raw materials and rationing of consumption. Introduced in 1942, the Utility Furniture Scheme continued into post-war austerity and lasted until 1952.
This programme had two important contribu- tions. First, the development from the Utility case as a means of foregrounding the role of the state in reconfiguring commodity chains, and underscoring ‘the implications of this insight for appreciating the historically contingent and politically constructed nature of chains.’
Second one, the case of Utility furniture provided a valuable window onto commodity chain dynamics at a time of crisis, sharply contrasting with contemporary global commodity chain analyses which emphasise ‘the durability, expansion and institutionality of global markets.
