Norman invasion and French influence. Social and cultural changes in society consequently lead to changes in language and literature. A Frenchman called William the Conqueror became the first Norman King of England during the Norman invasion in 1066. He reigned from 1066 until his death in 1087. During this time about 10, 000 French words were incorporated in the English language. French was introduced as the language of the royal court and in the law. It became the language of the kings and nobility of England for more than 300 years. A range of literary genres emerged, including chivalric romances, religious songs, folk ballads, drama, morality, and miracle plays.

"The Canterbury Tales" by Geoffrey Chaucer is a significant work as it is considered a determining factor for English to develop into a national language. "The Canterbury Tales" is a collection of 20 stories which give a realistic picture of medieval society, often with a touch of satire and humor. Part 1 of "The Canterbury Tales" is called “Wife of Bath” and is among the best known of Geoffrey Chaucer "Canterbury Tales". It was written in the 11th century and it provides an insight into the role of women in the Late Middle Ages.
