Descrizione:
Before Old English was introduced, England was under the rule of the Roman Empire. Latin was the language of power and various Celtic languages were spoken among common people. When the Roman Empire fell, the Germanic tribes moved into Europe. Around the year 450 new invaders arrived in Celtic England. Germanic tribes Angles, Saxons, and Jutes, all of them spoke various Germanic dialects. During this time the Old English was the west Germanic dialect. It had a core vocabulary and in today´s society in England, the town names stem from the Old English language. The Vikings spoke a language called Old Norse, which today is an extinct language. Old Norse and Old English were in many ways similar since they belonged to the same language family, Germanic. Therefore, the Old Norse constituents integrated with ease into Old English.
