The Robinson Treaties (1 gen 1850 anni – 31 dic 1850 anni)

Descrizione:

The Robinson Treaties were a set of treaties written in 1850, that were spearheaded by a man named William Beverly Robinson. They were written between settler colonies and the Anishinaabe tribe, for the use of land in the Huron and Superior regions of the Great Lakes. These treaties were signed on the belief that if the Anishinaabe agreed to non-Indigenous use of the land, and located themselves into specific places, that they would still be able to use the land and also get gifts from the colonies. On the other hand, the colonies believed that they were purchasing the land from the Anishinaabe and that because they were moving onto reserves, that they would share very little of the land that was signed for in the treaties. (Watson, Treaties and Treaty People, slide 32-33) The Robinson Treaties were an important part in Canadian history, because they have over a lot of the Great Lakes region to British and French settler colonies. These colonies gained a lot more new land on the shores of Lake Huron and Lake Superior, thus generating a newer form of economic growth; marine animals and marine land uses. It also saw a massive decline of the Anishinaabe people in the area; therefore the loss of more and more First Nations peoples, customs, languages and culture.
