Lucy Stone was a prominent U.S. orator, abolitionist, suffragist, and a vocal advocate and organizer promoting rights for women. In1847, she became the first woman from Massachusetts to earn a college degree. She spoke against slavery and cheered on women’s rights. Stone was known for using her birth name instead of her spouse’s surname, Blackwell. The custom at the time being for women to take their husband’s surname. Stone was 75 when she died.
