In the 6th century B.C.E the Etruscan king of Clusiam defeated the Romans and expelled their last king Tarquinius Superbus. Before Porsenna could establish himself as monarch he was forced to withdraw. Leaving Rome without a ruler. Thus the republic began with the king being replaced by two magistrates called consuls. The result of the new democratic government system was two different branches of society, Patricians and Plebians. At its height it controlled most of the Mediterranean and also controlled its trade. The downfall of the Roman Republic began with Julias Caeser taking over as a brief dictator and ulitmitely ended with Augustus´ reign.
