The number of religious orders established in Australia had grown greatly during this time. Apart from the religious orders hat already existed, such as the Sisters of Charity, the Christian Brothers and the Sisters of Mercy, Australia had also created many other religious orders including the Good Samaritan Sisters and the Sisters of Joseph. The 1860s were the peak years with 13,900 religious sisters. By 1871, these ‘Josephites’ set up schools all around the country, whether it be in rural or urban areas.
