-TRIBUTARY SYSTEM: neighboring countries payed tribute through money, goods, to honor the Chi nese emperor.

the fall:
- 8th c had a distracted emperor. An army of Uighurs (ethic group in Central Asia) came from the west and started a rebellion. In the end the Tang lost and had to pay annual tribute to the Uighur.
